Phonology
- Syllable structure is (C)V.
Orthography
- Four scripts: Kanji, hiragana, katakana, and rōmaji.
- Kanji used for names, nouns and base verbs and adjectives.
- Hiragana used for word ending, particles, words than have no kanji or where the kanji is difficult.
- Katakana used for foreign words, emphasis, onomatopoeia and technical or scientific terms.
- Rōmaji used for acronyms, brands and as a teaching tool.
